20 rom-coms that are perfect to watch during the spring

Maybe it’s because people often get engaged in the spring, or maybe it’s because people are getting excited about their upcoming summer travels, but something about The Proposal screams springtime. It could also be that we haven’t watched a Ryan Reynolds rom-com since Just Friends last Christmas. 

Is there anything better to defrost your heart from the long winter than watching Notting Hill? This movie will make you believe in love twice over, all the while giving off the most comforting spring vibes you can imagine. 

If you want to be reminded that your spring allergies could always be worse, watch Hitch . If you want to be swept up in the fantasy of falling in love with someone like Will Smith or Eva Mendes, watch Hitch. 

Mean Girls takes place throughout the entire school year but ends in the springtime, making it appropriate to watch this season. Honestly, it’s a movie that can be enjoyed year-round. Spring is just an excuse to watch it again. 

There’s something so refreshing about a springtime musical. It exudes happiness and fun. Easter Parade is the ultimate springtime musical, starring Fred Astaire and Judy Garland and featuring music by Irving Berlin. 

Something about a period piece screams springtime. Sense and Sensibility will have you laughing, swooning, and desperate to get outside in search of a paramour for a summer dalliance. 

Watching The Devil Wears Prada in spring? Groundbreaking. Seriously, though, when shouldn’t you watch this movie? It might not be an obvious rom-com, but it will have you inspired to up your spring wardrobe. 

If watching Sense and Sensibility wasn’t enough, dust off another Jane Austen classic and watch Pride & Prejudice. It’s still one of the best casts a rom-com has ever seen, and it hits just as much every time you watch it as it did the first time. 

Another not-so-obvious rom-com, The Sound of Music is a damn-near-perfect movie that always evokes laughter, heartbreak, love, and joy. It has the most beautiful scenery of nearly any film in existence, and it’s another excellent option for a springtime musical. 

If there’s anyone who knows how to put together a perfect spring day agenda, it’s Ferris Bueller. Watch this John Hughes classic when you’re feeling nostalgic this spring or to get some ideas for the next time you want to play hooky. 

Another good high school rom-com that takes place in spring, She’s All That will always get you in your feels. Rachael Leigh Cook? A young Freddie Prinze Jr.? How could a film get any better? 

If you’ve just finished bingeing your closet after a good round of spring cleaning, reward yourself with Confessions of a Shopaholic. It’ll remind you why it’s best not to go overboard with your spending and quell any temptations to fill your closet back up. 

Uptown Girls is perfect when you want a feel-good rom-com that’s not super heavy on the romance. It takes place in New York in the springtime, giving beautiful glimpses of the city throughout the entire film. 

Every movie that features a woman who works at a small-town diner should be watched in the spring. If you can’t manage that, at the very least, you should watch Waitress. 

If you can’t take yourself on a multi-country excursion this spring, watch Julia Roberts take one instead. Eat gelato while you watch Eat, Pray, Love, and meditate afterward so you can imagine you’re in Italy and Indonesia. 

Mamma Mia! might feel more like a summertime movie to some, but it’s never too soon to get in the mood for summer filled with love, laughter, music, and sunshine. Save Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again for the summer and watch Mamma Mia! now.

Most of us won’t be strolling through France in the middle of the night this spring, but we can pretend we are by watching Midnight in Paris . This Woody Allen film is perfection on screen, emitting springtime love as only a rom-com set in France can. 

Thank God for Nancy Meyers. If you’ve been missing her kitchens this winter, turn on It’s Complicated. It may not inspire you to find a fling this summer, but it will inspire you to collect more decorative knickknacks all season, which is just as important.  

Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, New York City, bookstore... Need we go on? We don’t need to reserve all the cozy movies for the fall. Some of them, like You’ve Got Mail, should be watched in the spring. 

We couldn’t end without suggesting one more Jane Austen adaptation. Emma. didn’t get as much recognition as it deserved, possibly because it came out in 2020, but it was nominated for two Oscars, one of which was for its quintessentially springy costuming.
